Fodera Fodera x DR 4-45105-N
really great strings
really great strings
I have discovered Fodera strings a few months ago,. I have been using D'Addario XL nickels (hex core) for ages, but I wanted to change for lighter tension and a lighter feel on some basses. I had past experience with DR Sunbeams, which I had liked, so I knew that round core was a way to go, but wanted also to explore what's out there. However there are not many makers with roundcore strings.
Throught internet review I found out that Fodera was one of them and that they actually manufacture their strings, not subcontracting from a big brand name like other luthiers may do (which is fine, not everybody can do everything). I liked the idea of a small shop making strings by hand, much like the luthier approach of things, and pricewise they're in the same ballpark as the DRs or other specialized strings ...
So I took the test with a first set on a 5 strings, and was absolutely delighted ! The tension is clearly on the softer side even with the same gauge as my previous XLs, the feeling under the finger is a bit rought at first (anything feels rough after some D'addario Xls) but it passes after a day or two, and the sound is excellent, balanced with mids taht are very growly, and no excessive highs or clang even when brand new.
I have now decided to gradually move most of my basses to these, hence the purchase of the 4 string set. Different bass but same enthusiam for this current set of 45-105 that for the 5 strings set ! Based on feedback on the first set on the 5 strings, back a few months ago, I'd say that durability is on the good side as well, they don't feel as tamed as D'addarios would.
All in all, I am really happy with the change, they are pricier than the previous strings but I have the feeling they'll last longer, and provide me more happy time with my basses in the process, so it's clearly a win.
